Justice DY Chandrachud appointed as next Chief Justice of India by President of India with effect from 9 Nov, 2022.
He will take over as 50th Chief justice of India after Chief Justice of India UU Lalit will retire from the post.
On October 11 CJI announced name of Justice DY Chandrachud as successor of his office. His term will last for two years till 10 November, 2024.
Union minister for law and Justice Kiren Rijiju congratulated Justice DY Chandrachud for being appointed as next Chief Justice of India.
Justice DY Chandrachud’s father Justice YV Chandrachud was 16th Chief Justice of India.
Justice DY chandrachud is famous for his liberal and progressive views. He recently passed verdicts on upholding right of women for seeking abortion upto 24 weeks; he also recognized privacy as fundamental right under article 21; he also decriminalised the offence of adultery.
Justice DY Chandrachud completed his graduation in Economics from St Stephens’s College, LLB from campus law center, Delhi University and LLM from Harvard law school, USA.
