On Thursday union cabinet clears the proposal for increasing the age of girls for marriage from 18 years to 21 years. The decision of the cabinet is based on the report submitted by Jaya Jaitly after examination of the age-related issue and specifically the challenge of motherhood faced by the girl on early age.

Soon the cabinet will introduce the amendment in following laws prohibition of child marriage act, 2006; Hindu marriage act, 1955; special marriage act.

In the independence speech by the prime minister, his concern for the health of women was mentioned.

Currently, the age for marriage of men is 21 years and for girls is 18 years. Soon this will be amended according to the reports.
