In a surprising turn of events, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court has revealed his intention to resign from his judicial post and venture into the realm of politics. Speaking exclusively to the Bengali news outlet ABP Ananda, Justice Gangopadhyay expressed gratitude towards the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) for repeatedly encouraging him to embark on a political journey, which he plans to commence on Tuesday, 5th March 2024.
Addressing his political aspirations, Justice Gangopadhyay clarified that he has yet to decide on his political affiliations or whether he will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He remains open to joining any of the major political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), or the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM).
While the judge did not confirm his candidacy for the Lok Sabha polls, he expressed gratitude towards the ruling party in West Bengal for challenging him to step into the political arena. He emphasized his desire to contribute to grassroots-level development, aligning with his commitment to public service as a High Court judge.
Justice Gangopadhyay’s decision comes at a time when he was due to retire from his judicial duties in August 2024, just five months away.
In response to the announcement, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury extended a warm welcome to Justice Gangopadhyay, stating that the Congress party would embrace him with open arms and utmost respect.
However, the judge’s decision has not been without its share of scrutiny. A Trinamool Congress leader on social media raised questions about Justice Gangopadhyay’s handling of the cash-for-jobs scam, a matter that had garnered considerable attention during his tenure.
Throughout his time as a judge, Justice Gangopadhyay has been embroiled in controversy, including a recent disagreement with a division bench presided over by Justice Soumen Sen. The matter was taken suo moto cognizance of by the Supreme Court.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s tenure as a High Court judge has been marked by a penchant for controversy, and his decision to enter politics is sure to stir further debate and speculation.
