Section 24 of the advocates act, 1961 deals with the qualification need to be an advocate. The eligible criteria for enrolling as an advocate are given under section 24 of the act.

Section 24 says that subject to the provision of the advocates act and rules framed by the bar council of India, the person who wants to be enrolled as an advocate on the roll of its State should be:

1. The person who wants to be enrolled as an advocate should be the citizen of India.
2. The person who wants to be enrolled as an advocate should be above 21 years.
3. Such person must have degree of law from the recognized university by the Bar Council of India or other degrees of law from foreign university recognized by the Bar Council of India for enrollment under this act as an advocate.
4. To be an advocate he must fulfil the rules prescribed by the state bar council.
5. The person who wants to be an advocate must pay the enrollment fees prescribed by the State bar council.

 Section 49(1)(ah) of the act inserted rule 9 to rule 11 in part 6 of chapter 3 of Bar council of India rules. The Bar council of India made the All India Bar Examination compulsory for practising as an advocate in the territory in which this act extends.
