A prominent Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist, known for being an outspoken critic of both the military and Islamist militants, was shot dead Monday outside a courtroom in the northwestern city of Peshawar, police said.

Abdul Latif Afridi, former president of the Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association, was shot dead multiple times on the Peshawar High Court compound.

We arrested the culprit on the spot, he said, adding that the suspect disguised himself as a lawyer to enter the courtroom.

A local attorney said the defendant did not attempt to flee after the shooting.

Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif condemned the killing and expressed his sorrow and sorrow.
