Society is a collection of individuals who are united by mutual consent for fulfilling one of the purposes defined under society act, 1860. These societies basically registered for the purpose of charity, education, religion, art, culture, etc. These societies establish unique relations with institution according to the purpose.
The registration and operation of society are regulated by societies registration act, 1860. Under societies act 1860, various purposes are given for which society should be registered. This act is enacted for providing specific legal procedure for regulation of society. States accepted this law without any further amendments and its working well till now.
PURPOSES GIVEN UNDER SOCIETY ACT
Under section 20 of societies act,1860 society can be registered for following purposes:
- Promotion of useful knowledge/ diffusion of useful knowledge/ instruction of useful knowledge.
- Maintenance of room or libraries.
- Foundation of reading rooms or library.
- Maintenance of galleries or public museum.
- Foundation of galleries or public museum.
- Foundation of military orphan funds.
- Promotion of literature.
- Promotion of science.
- For charitable purpose.
- For diffusion of political education.
- Promotion of fine arts.
Society registration process
Step 1. UNIQUE NAME SHOULD BE SELECTED FOR SOCIETY.
Step 2. PREPARATION OF MEMORANDUM OF ASSOCIATION AND DOCUMENT RELATED TO RULES AND REGULATION OF SOCIETY. ( contain function and purpose in MOA for which society registered, details of members of society and address of office of society)
Step 3. REQUIREMENT OF DOCUMENTS. (pan card, residence proof, memorandum of association, articles of association, letter, address proof, governing body, declaration)
Step 4. SUBMISSION OF DOCUMENTS AND ITS REGISTRATION.
The minimum number required for registration of society are 7 or more. Such member file an application for registration in states registration office working under state authority for registration of society.
