Two more underage girls were raped in another incident, police said, after three rape cases were reported in Tripura state in one month. Suspects in both cases were arrested.

In the first case, police said a seven-year-old girl was raped by her grandfather last Wednesday in Kowai district. The next day, the rape victim’s mother filed a complaint with the relevant police station, and her 88-year-old grandfather was arrested within hours. Police said the man later appeared in district court. “On November 17, an allegation of rape involving a minor girl around the age of seven was reported in Khowai District. Following the accusation, police immediately charged the defendant and launched an investigation,” said the deputy inspector. Official (Law and Order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said in a statement.

The statement also said legal action had been taken, including a medical evaluation of the survivors, and an investigation into them was ongoing.

In the second case, on Wednesday 16 November, a 14-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped in Unakoti district, 145 kilometers from Agartala. The girl later married the defendant, sources said. “Upon receiving the report, police immediately initiated proceedings against the accused. During the investigation, police arrested the main suspect within hours of registering the case,” police said.

Those arrested later appeared in district court and further investigations are underway.

Three similar minor rapes were reported to him last month in the state. A 64-year-old man was arrested last week on suspicion of raping his two-year-old girl in Dalai district. In October two minor gang rape cases were recorded in Unakoti and Kowai districts, with opposition parties claiming that Tripura’s Labor Minister’s son, Bhagavandas, was involved in the first.
