In a significant legal development, the Delhi High Court has intervened to address allegations of defamation against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia. The Court has ordered the removal of several posts on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and directed YouTube channels to make certain videos private amid claims that Bhatia was assaulted by lawyers in a Noida court.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna issued the order, citing the need to protect Bhatia’s reputation and prevent the dissemination of false information. The Court emphasized that while the press and media have a duty to report incidents, they must also uphold the truth. In this case, the Court found that the videos alleging Bhatia’s assault were sensationalized and based on false claims, constituting a threat to his reputation.
The judgement, delivered after careful consideration, highlighted the harmful impact of such misinformation on Bhatia’s reputation and the potential for future misuse. The Court ruled that until the defamation suit is resolved, the videos in question must be kept private to prevent further harm.
YouTube channels, including Article 19 India, The News Launcher, and BBI News, along with comedian Rajeev Nigam, were instructed to make the videos private. Additionally, X handles such as Sandeep Singh, Vijay Yadav, and NETAFLIX, among others, were directed to remove defamatory content.
Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, along with Advocates Raghav Awasthi and Mukesh Sharma, represented Bhatia in the legal proceedings. The Court acknowledged Bhatia’s concerns regarding the incident at the district court in Noida on March 20, where his lawyer’s bands were allegedly snatched by an advocate in the presence of the judge.
In response to Bhatia’s defamation suit, the Court has taken decisive action to safeguard his reputation and ensure that false allegations do not continue to circulate.
